Veteran Jatra artiste Mahendra Das popularly known as Viku Seth passed away at his residence in Choudwar in Cuttack district in wee hours today. He was 55. He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital from Choudwar to Cuttack after complaining acute chest pain but died on the way.
Sources closes to the artiste said he suffered severe chest pain late last night and died on the way to hospital.
He was an acclaimed jatra / Open pendal theater artist played negative character throughout his career. People loved his character in ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Melai’ so much that eventually he got the moniker of Viku Seth and became a household name in the state.
The superhit play ‘Saguna Basichi Dena Malei’ for his dialogue ‘Na ta tahale Mina, Bhala Nachila’. He had a long association with Kalinga Gananatya and the Jatra troupe was identified with this artist.
Begins his career with Satasankha Opera, the actor had also worked with Parbati Gananatya and Dhauli Gananatya. He had also played villain character in Odia film Jashoda, directed by late actor and director Hara Patnaik, 1996.
