History Behind Utkala Dibasa :-
After losing its complete political identity in 1568 following the defeat and demise of the last Hindu king Mukunda Dev, efforts resulted into the formation of a politically separate state under British rule on linguistic basis on April 1, 1936.
The main revolution for the separate state was continued for three decades from the very day of formation of Utkal Sammilani that lead the foundation of a separate Odisha Province. The movement was more intensed with the leadership of Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala mani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, Pandita Nilakantha Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, Gangadhar Meher, Basudeba Sudhaladeba, Radhanath Ray, Bhubanananda Das, A. P. Patro and many others with the support of the public.
The newly formed Odisha consisted of six districts namely Cutack, Puri, Baleswar, Sambalpur, Koraput and Ganjam having its capital at Cuttack. John Austin Hubback took oath of office and became the first Governor of Odisha Province.
In 1948 and 1949 the area of Odisha was almost doubled and the population was increased by a third with the addition of 24 former princely states. In 1950, Odisha became a constituent state of India.
Dr. Harikrishan Mehta became first Chief Minister of the state after Independence of the country. Leaders like Sh. Nandan Satpati, Shri Bijo Patnaik, Sh. Bishwa Nath Dass, Maharaj Narayan Singh Deo, Shri Birendra Mishra, Sh. Neelamani Raotrai, Sh. Nav Krishan Chaudhary, Sh. J.B. Patnaik have led the state with commendable devotion. Odisha has been the home of the Kalinga, Utkal, Kantara/Mahakantara and Kosal (South) who played a particularly prominent role in the region’s history. It was a major seafaring state that controlled and traded with most of the sea routes in the Bay of Bengal.
A major turning point in world history took place around 261 BC when the Mauryan emperor Asoka invaded Kalinga, which is famously known as Kalinga War. In this war Kalinga Soldiers fought bravely with great king Ashoka despite being without any leader. In this famous war around 1 lakh soldiers died and 1.5 lakh were arrested.
Kalinga is the place which transformed great king Ashok from Chandashu to Dharmashu. It is the place which provided route to Bodh dharma to flourish. It is the birth place of Sarla Das who wrote Sarla Mahabharat. It is a place of Konark Art, Odisha Dance, Chaw Nritya, Sambhalpur Dance. It is the place which has given five of its sons for the writing of the constitution of India. The Odisha is a place of highly skilled people. It is well known history that the Konark Temple was completed by 12 year son of a mason.
