Dr Shantanu Mohapatra is a legendary & multi-talented artist of Odisha & is the one of the most names in Odia music industry with which he has been associated with a almost 60 years.  Born in Nov 1936 to Late Soudamini & Ramesh Chandra Mohapatra in Baripada (Mayurbhanj), famous for its rich contribution to culture, music & history of Odisha . He Has received his B.Sc in Applied Geology and Geophysics in 1957 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He joined the State Directorate of Mining and Geology; Government of Odisha in June, 1957 as a Geologist from which he later retired as the Director (Mining & Geology) in 1994.

Carrier of Shantanu Mohapatra :-  
By profession Shantanu Mohapatra is a geophysicist (an IIT-Kharagpur pass-out)& had worked in Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), but still managed to spare some time for his compositions which romancing with the mineral stones. When asked about how he was able to manage both the worlds , he says “Earth (mineral science) is my pesha (profession) & music is my nasha (passion)”. He’s fondly called ‘Babunna” by his well wishers & relatives.

                  Shantanu Mohapatra  has been quite attached to two of his friends-cum-lyricists – Gurukrushna Goswami & Jibananda Pani & most of his hit compositions owes to their lyrics. His has a great musical family with his parents being good singers, brother Debasish Mohapatra (singer), singer niece Lopita Mishra. His immediate family consists of his better half Sikha Mohapatra, elder son Koushik & younger son Sambit who are a good source of support in his musical endeavours.

Recognizing  his lifetime contribution to Odia culture, the Utkal university of Culture conferred honorary D.Litt. on Shantanu Mohapatra in 2011. We salute this great man who has been the forefront in promoting Odia culture through his music for over 60 years.

Professional Work Details of  Shantanu Mohapatra :-

Shantanu Mohapatra played a key role in the discovery and exploration of deposits like Chromite, Bauxite (for NALCO & BALCO), Iron, Manganese, Limestone and Dolomite, China clay, Graphite and Gemstones besides Granites (Decorative Stones) in Orissa. He also did pioneering work on aero magnetic survey (for ground water and minerals), exploration, quarrying and development of Granite, exploration, mining & development of Precious Stones/Gem, Stones in the State.

                  Shantanu Mohapatra  formulated new regulations on gemstones, anti-smuggling & trading of minerals, new Act & Rules on licensing and storage, trading etc. of coal. During his tenure as Director, mineral production and mining revenue of the state touched an all time high of 39 million tonnes and Rs 115 Crores respectively.

Presently Shantanu Mohapatra  was the Director, Llyods Metals & Engineers, is on the Board of Directors, lspat Alloys, Kolkata, Advisor to NIPL (Neelachal Iron & Power Ltd.), Jamshedpur. He is also a consultant to JINDAL Stainless Steel, Bhubaneswar and M/s Orion Ispat Ltd

Shantanu Mohapatra joined the IPTA (Indian People’s Theatrical Association) while still at IIT, Kharagpur and learnt the art and technique of Choral singing under the famous poet-singer-composer, Salil Choudhury.

Career of Shantanu Mohapatra with Music :-

eodisha.org-Started his film career with two back to back hits –Surjyamukhi (1963) & Arundhati (1967)A born singer, Mr. Mohapatra learnt vocal music from Sangeet Narayan Banchhanidhi Panda from the age of five years and was ready for public performances at the tender age of nine years. He started early, creating a storm when he was recognised as a child prodigy after receiving the Best Singer Trophy for 4 consecutive years (singing Dhrupad, Khayal, Odissi, Champu and Bhajan) in the Annual All Orissa Music Competitions organised by ‘Utkala Sangeeta Samaaja, Cuttack.’

It was in his graduation years in Kolkata when he met Salil Choudhury & was greatly impressed with his style of music & incorporated the ‘jumping notes’ style in his Odia compositions.

Inspired by Salil da, Shantanu Mohapatra composed first Modern Odia Ballad “Konark Gatha” with lyrics by his friend cum lyricist Gurukrushna Goswami & sung by Akshay Mohanty & in later years,‘Kalijae’ sung by Sikandar Alam. Shantanu has many firsts to his credits in the field of Odia music (film, adhunik, telefilms, docu, jatra,bhajans etc) as a music composer – first modern lullaby in AIR (‘Soi pada re dhana’ sung by Santilata Rout), first qawali (ae ranga rahiba nahi from Surjyamukhi), first bhangra tune, first fusion & jumping note (Ago Chandrika by Raghunath Panigrahi) to name a few.

Shantanu Mohapatra’s Gift to Odia Film Industries :-

Shantanu Mohapatra also has the unique distinction of being the first to get the Hindi film greats like Lata Mangeskar (Surjyamukhi), Mohd Rafi (Arundhati), Manna Dey (surjyamukhi), Usha Mangeskar (Arundhati) & experimented with other artists like Suresh Wadekar, Anuradha Paudwal, Usha Uthup, Kavita Krishnamurthy & others with his Mumbai style orchestra music & choral songs which were quite unknown during that era of Odia music.

Shantanu Mohapatra’s Carrier as Odia movie music composer :-

                    Shantanu Mohapatra debuted as Odia movie music composer in 1963 with Surjyamukhi & went on to compose for 5o odd movies, features, tele films, documentaries & especially art movies creating milestones in his 60 years of musical journey. Among his films , there were national award wining films like Shodh by Biplab Roy Choudhury (first Hindi movie produced from Odisha)& Bagh Bahadur by Buddhadeb Das Gupta.

Shantanu Mohapatra has around 1900+ compositions, both film & non-film, to his credit among which there are 53 films (feature & tele),10 Jatras & 60 dramas by AIR (Cuttack) & 10 dance dramas. He has also won the highest number of awards & accolades as a music director in Odisha, totalling over 80.

Shantanu Mohapatra’s  popular composed Odia movie songs includes Sei chuna chuna (surjyamukhi), Mayuri go (Arundhati),Jja ja’re bhasi ja (Chilika teeray), Mun khoji bule (Agni Parikhya), Sei jhilmil (Megha Mukti), Mun ta thili ekutia (Dora), Subhadra kande na (Jaga Balia), Mun jibi (Golamgiri), Kete je sukha (Mukti Tirtha) & others. Similarly his popular Odia adhunik songs includes Duniya re sabudine/Aei jibana ta eka nataka/Rati re ..ama ghara (Pranab patnaik),Ago Chandrika/Nupura bajaye kie/Nali nali ae (Raghunath Panigrahi) , Je nayana ranga bhara (Sikandar Alam) etc.

Shantanu Mohapatra has many popular commercial Odia movies to his credit including Dora, Jaga Balia, Priyatama, Arundhati, Surjyamukhi, Agni Parikhya, Jibana sangram, Golamgiri etc.

Shantanu Mohapatra is equally know for his music composed for parallel movie including Klanta Aparanha, Majhi Pahaccha, Kichi Smruti Kichi Anubhuti, Bhanga Silata, , Vinna Samya, Mukti Tirtha, Nirbachana, Chilikatirrey, Aranya Rodan, Tara, Suki to name a few.

Shantanu Mohapatra scored music for the first ever Odia telefilm “Mamu’ based on Fakir Mohan Senapati’s novel (hindi songs were composed in Odia style for the first time) & later on ‘Lachchma’ & ‘Rebati’(again Fakir Mohan’s). His other musical experiments through telefilms or AIR includes ‘Manini Radhika (Odia Geeta Govinda), short film on Fakir Mohan, Ek Tha Rusti (based on Ruskin Bond story) &even tried creating dance drama (rhyme format) “Barna Bodha” from Madhusudan Rao’s fundamental Odia vernacular “Chhabila Madhu Barna Bodha Bodha” which is quite appreciable.
