According to the legend, Lord Krishna cursed his son Samba following which he was afflicted with leprosy.(This story varies in different purana books, some says Rishi Durbasha cursed and some says Narad muni). Samba was cured after worshipping the Sun God for twelve years near Konark Chandrabhaga. Hence on this auspicious day, mothers in Odia households offer prayers to the Sun God with different delicious food and observe special rituals for well-being and long life of their children.

In Odisha, a huge number of devotees throng the Chandrabhaga Tirtha close to the Konark Sun Temple, and take a heavenly plunge welcoming the Sun during sunrise. It is believed that taking a holy dip on this day exonerates one from all sins. As we all know, when the bacteria that cause leprosy are exposed to ultraviolet light, the procedure kills in to some extent. Therefore, sunlight may fight leprosy as it fights other bacteria, by stopping them at the source. As there were not much exposer to medical science in ancient odisha, this traditional believe were spreading the awareness.

This is another festival which celebrates the food loving attitude of odias. On this occasion people offer different types of mitha(sweet), pitha(panbcake/ rice cake), special vegetable curry called ghadaghadiabtarkari, makar chaula, muan, and fruits to Sun god and people worship the reflection of Sun on turmeric water bowl.
