BHUBANESWAR: Odisha government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Airport Authority of India today for development of the state’s second airport at Jharsuguda.
The MoU was signed between AAI chairman Alok Sinha and Nitin Chandra, the special secretary of the General Administration Department in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
To facilitate establishment of a full-fledged airport, the state will provide 296.50 acres of land free of cost
The proposed project worth Rs 210 crore would be implemented within two years of acquiring the required land and availing environmental clearance. Besides providing land, the state government has agreed to give Rs 75 crore for the project.
Stating that the existing airstrip at Jharsuguda already has more than 9,000 acres, Chandra said the state government would provide remaining 296.50 acres for the proposed airport.
Initially the proposed airport’s runway will be expanded from 6,000 ft to 9,000 ft, he said.
The Jharsuguda airport will provide air connectivity to north and western Odisha, Patnaik said.
Jharsuguda airport will have a great strategic significance as it would be located amidst a major industrial hub and mineral bearing areas, the Chief Minister added.
Odisha presnetly has only one airport – Biju Patnaik International Airport here.
