In this regard, a delegation of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) has just left for Lucknow to inspect the facilities at a bus manufacturing unit there. The team will study the features and manufacturing standards of the AC buses in Lucknow. As per sources, the existing buses were procured from Gurgaon.The state government recently sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the state housing and urban development department for procurement of the ‘cool’ buses. Each bus is likely to cost around Rs 40 lakh.
The state housing and urban development department recently announced to run 12 AC buses in the city under the JNNURM city bus project. At present nearly 40,000 daily passengers travel in 125 non-AC buses running on different routes in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri. The AC buses would be introduced in Bhubaneswar and subsequently in Cuttack and Puri.

The BMC has plans to start the AC buses on Airport-Nandankanan and KIIT Square-Master Canteen routes. There is also a proposal to operate these buses on KIIT-Balakati route so that tourists can avail this facility while visiting the Shanti Stupa (a Buddhist monument) at Dhauli. Intention to promote Bhubaneswar tourist places as well . (TOI)
The BPTSL authorities said bus operator Dream Team Sahara would launch ‘smart card’ system for commuters after procurement of the AC buses. The card would address the problem of coin scarcity. The radio frequency identification device in the smart cards would read the code printed on the card and deduct the fare amount. It would have a bar code to eliminate the possibility of tampering and confusion, sources added.
The BPTSL recently announced to improve the frequency of city buses by purchasing a fleet of 33 new buses. (src TOI)
