Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s chess star Aparajita Gochhikar has earned the distinction of becoming India’s youngest national coach to represent the country in Asian Youth Chess Championship-2017.
As per the letter issued by Sports Authority of India (SAI) ,Candidate Master (CM) and National Instructor (NI) title holder Aparajita will be coaching the team picked up for the world event to be held at Tashkent, Uzbekistan from March 30 to April 10.
Feeling excited with the offer, Aparajita said that she will be coaching chess participants representing India in the age group of 8 to 18.
It may be noted here that, the Uzbekistan Chess Federation (UCF) is organising the Asian Youth Chess Championship and Asian Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships.
Aparajita, aged 24 years from Puri has bagged many national and international titles. Earlier, she had bagged silver and bronze medals in open category in World Amateur Chess Championship-2016 at Halkidiki, Greece. Besides, she has also won silver medal at Commonwealth Chess Championship for two consecutive years in 2012 and 2013 at Chennai and Port Elizabeth, South Africa respectively.
She earned the Candidate Master (CM) title last year from FIDE (World Chess Federation).
Aparajita is an alumnus of city-based KIIT University. Currently, she is associated with KIIT Chess Academy for development of the sport in Odisha. src Pragatibadi
