Odisha-born IFS Amarendra Khatua takes over as secretary to government of India and director general Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) from 19th Sep. 2016 Monday.
At ministry headquarters, Amar Sinha and Amarendra Khatua will be the next Secretaries East and West respectively. While Sinha is currently India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Mr Khatua was India’s envoy to Argentina.
Dr. Amarendra Khatua is a career diplomat. He did his graduation from Delhi University in 1978. He is a poet and has written several poems in Odia. Dr. Amarendra Khatua joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1981. He has worked as a Commercial Counsellor in Trade & Economic Positions in Spain, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Mexico and USA. He has served as India’s Ambassador to Argentina, Cote De Ivoire and concurrently as Ambassador to Guinea and Liberia and as High Commissioner to Sierra Leone. He has also served in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Planning Commission and Ministry of Industry. He has been the Director (Finance), Ministry of External Affairs and worked in Finance Division, Northern Division, Latin America Division in the Ministry of External Affairs. India in the last week of March 2012 appointed Amarendra Khatua as its special envoy to South Sudan and Sudan to broker peace between the two countries. This was done with the objective of strengthening India’s pursuit of oil and other hydrocarbon resources in Africa.
Dr. Khatua has special interest in Odia poetry. Khatua began to write poetry decades before he ventured into diplomacy. He has many publications including in Odia, English, Hindi and Telugu to his credit. In addition to this, his poetry has been translated in all major Indian languages and in Spanish and Russian. src – OrissaDairy
