Tourists planning to visit Chandaka wildlife sanctuary can visit all the attractions inside the sanctuary in an open-top jeep that would be provided by the sanctuary authorities.
Official sources said the 193 sq.km sanctuary has 26 places, which are known for their scenic beauty, sighting of animals and birds and natural water bodies. “The move is aimed at attracting more tourists to the sanctuary. Now tourists use their own vehicles which are covered.
The open-top jeep will facilitate better view of the forest and wildlife,” said divisional forest officer (Chandaka) Kedar Kumar Swain. “We may rope in some private party to run these open jeeps. The eco-guides will accompany the tourists in every vehicle and tell them about the flora, fauna and routes,” he added.
Chandaka has two eco-tourism sites, Deras and Godibari, where tourists can put up and many locations to visit. The famous ones are Kochilaberena, Ambakhali, Baunsaberena, Bualigarh, Kumarakhunti, Chudangagarh, Jumka, Jhalara and Ambilo.
Ambakhali is a religious place in the sanctuary. The natural water body near this site attracts prey animals, which come to drink water. Baunsaberena, located in Chandaka reserve forest is another huge water body, while Bualigarh is known for its fort, said to have been built by then king Chodaganga Dev. It is one of the architectural marvels, which has been ruined to a considerable extent.
Official sources said the bamboo house at Deras is under repair and it will be ready before the second week of October. The Godibari tourist complex is ready to facilitate stay of tourists.
Recently, the Chandaka authorities planned combined tour package that will facilitate them to visit the nearby Nandankanan zoo and Anshupa lake in Athgarh forest division. Official sources said since tourists visiting the capital city can include it in their itinerary a visit to both Chandaka and Nandankanan, the combined tour package will help authorities attract more tourists.
The Chandaka authorities will tie up with the Nandankanan zoo and Athgarh division so that tourists get one entry pass and one-time payment of tariff to visit the three places. The tour plans will be uploaded in the official website of Chandaka wildlife division.
