Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das (28 April 1848 – 4 February 1934) was the first graduate and advocate of Odisha. He was born on 28 April 1848 in a village called Satyabhamapur, 20 kilometres from Cuttack, Odisha. He is known as Kulabruddha (କୁଳବୃଦ୍ଧ) which means Grand Old Man & Utkal Gourab (ଉତ୍କଳ ଗୌରବ) which means Pride of Utkal and was referred to as a poet and freedom fighter.

Madhusudan Das was a source of inspiration for the lawyers in Odisha and in India. Madhusudan Das’s birth anniversary is observed to be a Lawyers’ Day in the Odisha.
Lawyers’ Day is celebrated across Orissa in India on 28 April every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Madhusudan Das, a legendary Oriya lawyer of the British era and popularly called Madhu Babu or Madhu Barister. He was the first Oriya law graduate, a legal luminary and a source of inspiration for lawyers in the State. His skill as a lawyer was best manifested in the Puri Mahunta case in which he defended a poor Rayat and got a decree against the mighty defendant. The second famous case is the Lord Jagannath Temple in which case his brilliant advocacy restored the nine year old Yuvraj with all pride. He was the only inspiration to bring the women of the state to enter advocacy.The day is also observed as Swaviman Divas. Many functions including cultural shows are organised by the Bar members throughout the state.
Madhusudan Das became the first Odia to complete his B.A. Madhusudan Das continued his studies there to complete his M.A. in 1873 and B.L. degree in 1878, thus becoming the first ever scholar from Odisha to achieve these feats.
Known as ‘Madhu Babu’ by the common people, he worked for the political, social and economical upliftment of the people of Odisha and served his motherland as a lawyer, social reformer and patriot.
why do we celebrate 1st April as Utkal Dibasa ;-
Madhusudan Das founded Utkal Sammilani which brought a revolution in the social and industrial development of Odisha. By his long political fight he united Odisha & modern Odisha took birth on 1st April 1936. This day is celebrated as Utkala Dibasa.
Madhusudan Das has been admired as a legislator and journalist. Madhusudan Das was the first Oriya to become a member of both the legislative council and theCentral Legislative Assembly of India. Madhusudan Das was the first Indian Minister. Madhusudan Dase was also the first Oriya to sail overseas.
Madhusudan Das founded the Utkal Tannery in 1905, a factory producing shoes and other leather products.
In 1897 he founded the Orissa Art Ware Works. With his support, the Tarakasi(filigree) work of silver ornaments achieved commendable feet.
