“The Central government-sponsored Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) has accepted Odisha government’s proposal in this regard,” added Panigrahi.
All the women’s colleges in the State affiliated to Utkal University will be brought under the new women’s university, the minister said, adding that the State government would do the needful in this direction soon.
Once the process is completed, the premier women’s higher education institution of Odisha would become the country’s second women’s university after the SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
A proposal in this regard was submitted by the State government to the Union ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The Project Approval Committee (PAC) of the ministry has cleared the proposal in its meeting chaired by Union Higher Education secretary Satyanarayan Mohanty in Delhi recently.
The ministry has also informed the decision to the State’s Department of Higher Education (DoHE). Higher Education principal secretary Gagan Kumar Dhal is the project director of RUSA and would be taking up the project, sources said.
The Odisha Government has received a sanction of Rs 126 crore on various aspects including Rs 25 crore for the RD Women’s College to upgrade it as a women’s university. The cost of setting up the proposed women’s university would be Rs 75 crore with the MHRD bearing 65 per cent of it.
Panigrahi further said that RUSA has agreed to give a ‘cluster university’ status to Berhampur-based Khallikote Autonomous College. “Colleges located close to Khallikote College will be brought under this cluster university’s purview,” he added.
