Tips to Guess Correct Answers in MCQs in IIT JEE

IIT-JEE is a national level engineering entrance exam, conducted by CBSE for granting admissions into different undergraduate courses offered at various engineering colleges in India. Due to the vastness of its syllabus and the level of competition, it is regarded as one of the most challenging engineering entrance exam globally.

Admissions are granted into NITs and IIITs on the basis of scores obtained in JEE Mains; admissions into IITs and ISM are granted on the basis of marks scored in JEE Advanced. Both the JEEexams are objective type and your score in JEE depends on circling the correct bubble. To avoid blind guessing of answers negative marking is introduced in most of the questions. But if you could guess the answers sensibly, your score will never be affected by negative marking.
Some tricks are given below that could help you to guess some answers correctly in JEE:

Neglect Extreme values:
This might seem weird but in at least 70% of the answers where the question demands a numerical value to be answered, the lowest and the height values would never be a correct option. Therefore, whenever you are unable to calculate the correct answer, staying away from the extreme values might help you.

Never skip questions that do not carry any negative markings:
Both in JEE Main and JEE Advanced, there are a certain set of questions that do not carry any negative markings and you should never skip such questions even if you don’t have any idea about the answer. You will lose nothing in guessing their answers and there is always a fair chance that your guess might go well and by leaving them unattempted you could even lose the opportunity of scoring marks.

Eliminate the incorrect options by substitution:
Sometimes instead of solving the entire equation, it is much better to substitute the given options into the equation to reach the correct answer. By this way, you could easily eliminate the incorrect options to reach the final option which would also save much of your time for answering the other questions.

Example: Suppose you have to find the domain and range of any function and the given options are: (a) [(10,11) U (12,13) ; (b) (10,11) U (12,13)] ; (c) [10,11] U [12,13] ; (d) (10,11) U (12,13)
For solving these types of questions you don’t need to solve the entire function for finding its domain and range. You just need to test the given function on extreme values [10, 11, 12] and check which one of the option satisfies the given function.

Be Calm and read the entire question carefully:

Before answering any question you should read the entire question very carefully and understand what information is provided in the question and what is asked. Recall all the formulas associated with the question and strike out the incorrect options. If you are just left with two options and you are unable to find the correct one then try to gamble on either. Out of the given four options, when you have managed to cross out two options then with the remaining two options it’s better to guess for one option.
