              World Famous & biggest open air theater Dibya Mahotsav Dhanu Jatra tagged to National Festival Status     

               Dhanu Jatra or Dhanu Yatra is a drama festival celebrated in Western Odisha based on mythological story of Krishna, and his demon uncle Kansa. Nowadays this play, enactment is being performed in many places across Western Odisha, but the most famous and oldest place of performance being at Bargarh . It is about the episode of Krishna and Balaram’s visit to Mathura to witness the ceremony of ‘Bow’ organised by their mama (maternal uncle)Kansa or Kamsa. The plays start with the dethroning of emperor Ugrasen, by the angry prince Kansa, over the marriage of his sister Debaki with Vasudev, and ends with death of Kansa, and Ugrasen restoring back to become the King.

History  of  Dhanu Jatra or Dhanu Yatra :- 

Some devotees of Lord Krishna of Bargah have started regular communication to Brindavan in 18th Century. River Yamuna is situated in the west of Mathura, Gopapur is situated in the west of River Yamuna and Brindavan is situated in the southwest of Gopapur. The geographical area of Bargrah, Ambapali and River Zeera of Bargarh District look similar to that of Mathura, Gopa, Brindavan and River Yamuna respectively as because River Zeera (Yamuna) is situated in the west of Bargarh (Mathura), Ambapali (Gopapur) is situated in the west of River Zeera (Yamuna) and Ambatota (Brindavan) is situated in the southeast of Ambapali (Gopapur).

The devotees started the first “Divya Mahotsava Dhanuyatra” in 1870 Shakabda Pousa Sukla Pratipada Sombar (Monday) dated 12.01.1948 at 12:00 noon and ends on Pousa Purnami Sombar (Monday) dated 26.01.1948 at 9:00 am.

The Department of Culture of the Government of India has accorded national festival status to the famous Dhanu Yatra in Odisha’s Bargarh town.

This was informed by the Bargarh MP Pravas Singh and collector Anjan Manik at a meeting here on Friday.

They said the district administration and the organizing committee have already started preparatory measures two months ahead of the festival.

To make the festival more lively and attractive, a decision has been taken to select the actors to perform in various roles for which a selection committee has been formed under the chairmanship of additional collector Simanchal Mandal.

Besides, well-known Bollywood and Ollywood actors and reputed cultural organizations at the national level would be roped in for the festival this year, they informed.

The meeting decided to bring out a souvenir on the festival in English for the first time. Bargarh MP Pravas Singh would be in charge of its publication.
