Cycling under the STARS – Cycle through out Night 160 km #Bhubaneswar- #Puri- #Konark- #Bhubaneswar

“A crazy thing to do…but what’s life without some craziness!

The 12 hour mesmerising ‘Cycling under the STARS’ will forever remain as a cherished and fulfilling experience that I will be proud of years later. The midnight ride on one of the longest eerie and spooky roads , the Puri Konark Marine Drive was one of its kind feeling. Thanks and kudos to all participants for being a wonderful team. Cheers to life, cheers to BCAC, cheers to pedalling!”: This feeling was shared on the facebook by Ms Namrata Patra after participating in the 160 km night cycle ride.

Miffed by the rising mercury in the daytime, the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club (BCAC) came up with yet another unique way to make riding pleasurable, fun and a happy experience. “Cycling under the stars”, a one of its kinds cycling event, that gives every rider an opportunity to see, feel and experience the beauty of the night while doing what they are most passionate about, cycling.

Quite unexpectedly the response from the cycling community was tremendous and the turnaround of 36 participants, was well above expected. Few cyclists from Cuttack also joined the event.

The Peloton (a group or pack of cyclists riding together) started the journey at 8 PM on April 14, from unit six Bhubaneswar. With safety of paramount importance, the cyclists had put on neon green jersey for better visibility.

Powerful front lights, shining rear lights, dazzling rim lights, blinking helmet lights, flashy shoe lace colour lights added a festive dimension to the ride. After crossing the hustles and bustles of the city, the cyclists reached the Puri high way near Daya river bypass moved on NH 316 crossing Pipili, Sakhigopal, Chandanpur to reach Puri at about midnight covering nearly 60 km. The cyclists faced strong, very strong headwind that dipped the per hour average much below the usual standard, but also made the ride exhausting within a short distance. The Gurukul Volunteers who waited especially for the peloton to cross Sakhigopal at about 10.30 pm, cheered the cyclists with thunderous claps. The cyclists were applauded and encouraged by onlookers throughout the journey.

Dinner was organized at ‪#‎WildGrass‬ and as always YugabratKar an avid cyclist, had made all necessary arrangements and served the cyclists an amazing dinner. After relaxing at the pit stop the peloton headed for Konark, via the 35 km majestic marine drive. This was truly the “Cycling under the STARS” part of the entire ride. With a gazillion stars shining overhead and the blinking head and tail lights of the riders down below, the experience was surreal and ecstatic. With dense casurina trees on either side, the road was passing like a long tunnel through the Balukhand Deer Reserve Forest. The carefree shouts, yells, cheers and songs did make the cyclists feels like the king of the roads. The tailwind now did somewhat compensate for the brutal headwind that the team experienced earlier.

The peloton reached Chandrabhaga at about 3.30 am and decided to rest for sometime. Flex sheets, mats were laid down on the golden sands of Chandrabhaga sea beach. Laying down under the stars and feeling the sand, breeze, the sounds of the waves and the calmness of the surrounding, made the physical exhaustion feel so trivial and non-existent. Day broke at 4.30 am and the team was ready to roll the pedals yet again, for the next destination, Nimapara. The ride to Nimapara was rather steady and the coolness of the morning aided the cyclists.

The cyclists hit Nimapara at about 6.30 am and stopped for the gastronomic delight that the place is famous for, ChennaJhilli. The team resumed their onward journey and reached Bhubaneswar at 9.30 am, thus bringing to close the 160km mesmerizing event that was true to its name “Cycling under the STARS”, leaving the cyclists yearn for more such events.

One of the key member Sri Lalit Das summarised his experience “ Puri to Konark pitch dark ride was thrilling and ghostly feeling. But enjoyed it lot, Group was excellent, Perfect chemistry, Perfect arrangements, Sleeping for one hour on marine drive road was like ‘ never done before, BCAC hip hip hurray”.
